Did you know that, as an alumnus, you receive lifetime borrowing privileges from the Louis B. Mayer Library? Library accounts for AFI Conservatory Alumni and DWW Alumnae are complimentary and include the following services based on availability:

  • Facility access to the Louis B. Mayer Library and the Computer Lab
  • Borrowing of circulating material, up to three (3) items at a time regardless of format
  • Use of non-circulating Library materials
  • On-site access to Thesis, Cycle, and DWW films
  • Remote access to the Library online catalog, LibraryWorld
  • Use of Library and Computer Lab hardware and software
    • Access can be requested from Library or Computer Lab Staff
    • Priority will be given to current Fellows

Important note: Photo identification must be presented when borrowing Library materials. Use of printers in the Library and the Computer Lab is prohibited. OPPORTUNITIES  

BLUE ANGEL

This is an editing opportunity for a short documentary – About 80% of the rough cut has been completed by the Director but we need a talented editor to take it to 100%, ready to submit to the major film festivals.

Log line: When an artist’s wife is beset with severe dementia during covid-19, due to visitation restrictions at a skilled nursing facility, the only way he could communicate his love was through his art, small bunny cartoons delivered daily.

Target film duration: About 8-12 minutes, depending on film festival requirements for the short documentary category.

Recruitment process: Editors to submit reel and resume, short list will be interviewed by Director, and selection will be made based on project fit.

Project Name: Feelings Playbook

Role: Editor for Video Guide

Location: Los Angeles, CA/Remote


We are clinical psychologists who have been working on developing a video guide for parents to help understand and navigate their children’s big feelings. We shot the video and now need help with editing it. The video is about an hour and 20 minutes total and is broken up into 9 chapters.

We would love to work with someone who is motivated and has time to complete the video in a 1-2 weeks.

Rate $25/hr
Timeline: 20-30 hours

2023 Roy W. Dean Film Grant for Summer Now Accepting Submissions

Now in its 31st year of supporting indie filmmakers, the Summer Grant of the  Roy W. Dean Film Grants is now accepting entries. Awarded by top-rated 501(c)3 non-profit From the Heart Productions, the grant seeks unique films that make a contribution to society.  Deadline for grant submissions is June 30th, 2023.

 

The grant is open to documentaries, narrative features, short films and web series budgeted at $500,000 or less.  Films can be at any stage of production.  Students are welcome to apply.

 

Winner of the Roy W. Dean Film Grant for Summer will receive $3,500 and thousands more in donated film products and services including $1,295.00 Scholarship to Writers Boot Camp, $500 in grip, lighting or expendables from Filmtools,  a 30% Discount by Jerry Deaton for Music Post Production Services at AudioKut , $750 in Grant Writing Services from Karen Everett of New Doc Editing, and more from many heartfelt donors.

Britt Penrod Award

$500 will be awarded to grant applicant with a film that is unique but also makes an exceptionalcontribution to society. The grant is made possible by a generous donation by its namesake, Britt Penrod, who has been a great supporter of independent films.  Winner of this award does not need to be the Roy W. Dean Grant recipient. 

 

Every Filmmaker That Applies Can Get Help on Their Project

Since its inception, the Roy W. Dean Film Grant has offered something for applicants that is itself unique for a grant.  Every filmmaker that applies for the grant has the opportunity to receive a 15-minute consultation on their submission.  Filmmakers can get advice on how to find funding, build up a database of donors or investors, market their film, and more.

Short Script Screenwriting Lab

Short scripts are a fantastic way to get your screenwriting feet wet, explore a new genre, hone your craft, and gain recognition within the entertainment industry.

 

At least 4 winners will be invited to take part in our exclusive Virtual Shorts Lab to help define the next steps in their projects journey – whether that’s self-producing, crowdfunding, or connecting it with producers looking for short content.

This year WeScreenplay is excited to partner with Talon Entertainment Finance who will select one project from this year’s submissions to receive a $10,000 short film grant. Talon Entertainment will also offer development mentorship and support to the selected project and writer. They will also review all of this year’s lab finalists scripts and meet with select finalists

Operation Street Kidz is hosting its first script producing competition and is looking for submissions! Thanks to funding from La Plaza de Cultura y Artes’ Eastside Arts Initiative, as well as a partnership with Two Seas Media, we are looking to produce short films from Mexican American writers located in and around the Los Angeles area. Thanks to our partners and their contributions, we are now able to produce high quality, low budget short films that will provide aspiring filmmakers the opportunity to take that first big step as creators!

WRITEGIRL IS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS! Support the voices of teens in Los Angeles! Volunteer as a writing mentor or help behind the scenes in supporting the work that WriteGirl and Bold Ink Writers are doing to inspire teens to develop their creativity and writing skills! WriteGirl (www.writegirl.org) is a creative writing and mentoring organization that empowers underserved teen girls in Los Angeles through mentoring relationships with women writers, hosting large-scale writing workshops at such places as the Huntington Gardens, The Autry and LACMA. Since 2001, WriteGirl has maintained a 100% success rate in guiding girls to not only graduate from high school, but also enroll in college. WriteGirl is seeking women writers in all genres including novelists, poets, journalists, songwriters, copywriters, legal writers and more to help mentor teen girls, lead workshops and inspire girls to express their creative ideas. Weekly and monthly mentoring opportunities available. WriteGirl is also seeking women professionals to volunteer behind-the-scenes with events, public relations, fundraising and partnerships. (Strong communication skills required.) WriteGirl’s Bold Ink Writers Program is seeking men with creative writing skills to lead writing workshops for teen boys and co-ed groups during the school day. Workshops will take place throughout Los Angeles, from alternative schools to detention camps, for teens of diverse backgrounds. Daytime/weekday availability required.
