The 9th Annual Film Pipeline Short Script Contest is geared toward writers and directors looking to get a project financed and produced, or seeking development on a proof of concept for a feature.
Our execs collaborate 1-on-1 with the finalists and winner, supporting efforts on their selected script as well as future features or pilots. Think of this less as a contest and more as an opportunity for long-term mentorship and development no matter what path you’re on in film and TV.
Accepting all genres—from traditional stories, to “experimental,” to animation. Go big (just short).
DOCUMENTARY LABS

Taking place in the spring, the Documentary Story Lab helps directors hone their story as they dive into the editing phase of their feature documentary. Over the period of one week, directors with projects in late production/early post-production attend multiple workshops and sessions with guest speakers, established documentary directors, institutional funders, legal professionals, and distributors. Fellows are paired with an experienced Editing Advisor who provides one-on-one support. The Lab culminates in a final pitch event that offers further opportunity for individualized feedback and discussion with industry executives.

GRATON ARTIST OPPORTUNITY

The Sundance Institute | Graton Artist Opportunity serves to cultivate a stage for artists from federally and non-federally recognized California Indian tribes to tell their stories through film. Artists will receive access to curated courses from the Sundance Collab platform, which provides a virtual destination for emerging artists to learn craft and career strategies and to build community through courses, workshops, advisor sessions, extensive resources, and virtual community gatherings.

Thank you for your interest in Film Independent’s Documentary Producing Lab.
The 2026 Documentary Producing Lab, held in September, is designed for producers working primarily in the nonfiction space.
For one week, Fellows participate in workshops designed to help them navigate the ever-changing documentary landscape, with a focus on financing, finishing and distributing their films. Please note that the Lab will take place in person at our office in Los Angeles.
The Documentary Producing Lab accepts projects in active development, production or post-production. Applicants must submit a work sample of their current project. If they do not have a work sample of their current project, please include a work sample of a previous project.

SANDBOX FUND

The Sandbox Fund offers grants, engagement events, and other opportunities for independent artists seeking to explore the intrinsic link between science and culture through innovative storytelling. The program is administered by the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund, in collaboration with Sandbox Films.
Grants
The fund offers support to projects at all stages of development, production, and post-production. Average grant sizes are as follows:
- Development (up to $40,000)
- Production (up to $100,000)
- Post-Production (up to $100,000)
BLACK IMMERSIVE CREATORS GRANT

The creator(s) of the project must self-identify as Black and be based in the United States.
- This grant is open to artists who create primarily immersive experiences, as well as those who are new to the immersive industry who are interested in pushing the boundaries of their existing practice.
- We invite early career and established creators to pursue this grant.
- The applicant must be the director, lead producer of the project, or be in a similar leadership capacity.
- The applicant must be at least 18 years old.
Selection Criteria
- The grant awardee will be chosen by a selection panel made up of the grant’s board of directors and other arts professionals.
